The Peer Editing Rubric below was adapted from the rubric on the Florida DOE website.

Florida Standards Assessment Informative/Explanatory Writing Rubric

For each of the following, answer yes or no. Also point out to your peer the sections of the essay that could be improved. Suggest ideas for improvement.

Purpose, Focus, and Organization: Write average for all of below ____. (Divide by eight.)
  1. Does the essay have a clearly stated thesis?___
  2. Do each of the body paragraphs clearly relate to the thesis (controlling idea of the essay)? (Check that the essay does not get "off track" or include loosely related material.)___
  3. Does the essay have effective transitions between ideas and paragraphs? ___
  4. Is the essay well organized and focussed from beginning to end?___
  5. Does the essay have a good introduction?___
  6. Does the essay have a good conclusion?___
  7. Is the language of the essay appropriate for a formal essay?___
  8. Is the essay strictly objective, based on facts from the texts (no opinion)?___
Based on all of the above, rate the essay on a scale of 1 to 4. (1 is the lowest score and 4 is the highest score):


Evidence and Elaboration: Write average for all of below ____. (Divide by six.)
    1. Does the essay smoothly integrate thorough and relevant evidence?___
    2. Does the essay include precise references to the sources by using parenthetical citations?___
    3. Does the essay include good examples and quotations (not too long) to support the thesis/controlling idea?___
    4. Does the essay include precise, specific language in the elaboration (not general or vague)?___
    5. Is the elaboration appropriate for the purpose (thesis) of the essay?___
    6. Does the elaboration flow (is it easy to read?) with well-written sentences that vary in length?___
    Based on all of the above, rate the essay on a scale of 1 to 4. (1 is the lowest score and 4 is the highest score):


    Conventions of Standard English: Write average for all of below ____. (Divide by two.)
      1. Does the essay include only minor errors (a few at most) in writing?___
      2. Does the essay adequately use correct punctuation, capitalization, sentence formation, and spelling?___

      Analysis of "How It Feels to Be Colored Me" by Zora Neale Hurston

      Zora Neale Hurston, an important voice of the Harlem Renaissance, was an American folklorist, anthropologist, and novelist best known for her work, Their Eyes Were Watching God.   Sadly, she died in 1960 after suffering financial and medical difficulties.  In 1973, Alice Walker, another famous American writer, "rediscovered" Hurston and promoted her body of work.  In the classic essay, "How It Feels to Be Colored Me," Hurston explores the idea that all of us have multiple selves, depending upon the context and environments in which we find ourselves.  Hurston's writing has an ebullience, self-assertiveness, and pride that is particularly evident in this text.  She was a flamboyant and dramatic personality, at times clashing with fellow writers from the Harlem Renaissance, who believed that black Americans should use their art to speak out against racial oppression and the white majority.       Online Tutoring for the FAST or Anything Else Related to English (For example, the Digital PSAT/SAT)

      ATC Students and Students from Any Other Secondary School or College: To help students prepare for the first "progress monitoring" session of the FAST, I will be tutoring during the summer months. Every Sunday, send your request for a time and day during the upcoming week in which you tell me when you would like to meet. I will do my best to meet your needs and then send you a link to an online Tutoring session. The first progress-monitoring part of the FAST will take place on September 17. 2024. Retakes will be given on September 24, 2024.
