Email Problem on Canvas

Hi Scholars,

Some of you have been trying to reach me via Canvas emails. For some reason, I can't open your emails on Canvas. From now on, let's use the school email system: james.mulhern@browardschools.com.

For those of you who emailed me this a.m., please email me again through the school email.

Thank you.

Mr. Mulhern

REMINDER: Read all posts on my website from March 14 onward.

Hi Scholars,

I am getting a lot of emails with questions that are addressed on my website. Again, read carefully all my posts from March 14 onward. I suggest you take notes. Check my website twice a day (9:05 a.m and 4:00 p.m.) for possible new posts. Sign into Canvas every day. Your signing on to Canvas is how the District is checking "virtual" attendance. Check announcements there every day as well. Click on "Announcements" under "Home" on the left. There may be no new announcements but check just in case.

Problems With Canvas

Hi Scholars,

Because of the amount of traffic on the internet and Canvas, the Canvas system is having problems. If you find you can't get on, try back later. With hope, they may be able to work out the issues soon.

Remember: Sign onto my website at least twice daily--once in the morning and again at 4 p.m. The district is tracking attendance by checking that you have logged on to Canvas, so you should also sign into Canvas every morning to look for any new announcements. In that way, your "virtual" attendance will be recorded.

Thankfully, this website is the primary means of communication.

Important: About Virtual Attendance--Done Through Canvas

Dear Scholars,

The district will be recording daily attendance based on the record of your signing into Canvas (the district can tell which students log on to Canvas each day). Be sure to log on to Canvas daily and check for any new announcements. In this way, your attendance will be recorded.

ENC1101 and ENC1102: Glitch May Occur With Canvas

Hi Scholars,

If you run into problems with Canvas, you may have to log in again and then accept enrollment. Some students were inadvertently dropped from course lists as we moved to the new quarter.

ENC1102: Assignments for the Week of March 30, 2020

Please read every post very carefully (twice if needed). There may be a lot of important information in each post.

Print out and annotate these stories. Highlight important sentences. If there is not enough room for annotations on the printout, write notes in your binder. Focus on how different types of literary rhetoric (organization of plot, details, characterization, dialogue, imagery, mood/tone, shifts, setting, figurative language, connotations of diction, etc.) support a theme. Indicate page numbers, paragraph numbers, line numbers, as appropriate. Also do the "Shorter Analysis Activity": https://scholarmulhern.blogspot.com/2019/11/analysis-of-text-shorter-version.html. Please type your Shorter Analysis Activity, as you may need to email it to me or upload it to Canvas. Do not send any work until I request it.

ENC1101 and ENC1102: Reminders and Clarifications

I have been getting emails for clarification.

For Clarity:

Work on anything from March 14 onward (obviously, you should have already completed the previous work). The Research Paper (your main focus as of today) should be uploaded to Canvas on April 6 (not before; not after). Type all assignments. ENC1101: Remember, you are also responsible for MyLabsPlus. Adhere to the deadlines on that site.

ENC1101 and ENC1102: Research Papers--Due Date Changed

Hi Scholars,

Because of Canvas term date changes, I need to change the due date of the Research Paper. The new date is by the end of the day on April 6. No late essays. No exceptions. You will get a grade of zero.

ENC1101 and ENC1102: Research Papers

Hello Scholars,

I hope you are well. You must upload your Research Papers to Canvas by March 31. Do not email them to me. Use correct MLA style. Follow the guidelines in the Research Paper post.

ENC1101: https://scholarmulhern.blogspot.com/2018/03/research-paper-importance-of-truth.html

ENC1102: https://scholarmulhern.blogspot.com/2015/11/english-iii-career-research-essay.html

Assistance with Research Paper Format: https://scholarmulhern.blogspot.com/2014/03/mla-format-and-research-paper.html

I realize the Research Paper post says for you to staple a Proofreading Checklist to the front of your paper. Because of the changed circumstances, you no longer need to include the Proofreading Checklist when you upload it to Canvas. However, please use the checklist to ensure you have written an excellent essay. Remember that this paper is a major grade and could affect your passing the class.

Hello Scholars,

I hope you are all doing well. Please convey to as many classmates as you know that they must be checking this website daily for new posts, assignments, announcements. This website will be the primary source of information. I will be using Canvas at a later point as a place for you to upload your work. I do not need any work from you right now. I will let you know when through this website.

Hi Scholars,

Keep doing the work you see posted, especially the Research Paper, and for ENC1101--MyLabsPlus. Check this website every day in case I have posted something new.

Communicate with each other. Stay in touch. Spend quality time with your family. Read. Reflect.

I will let you know at a future date when I want assignments. Keep in mind the deadlines already established for the Research Paper and MyLabsPlus (ENC1101).

I will most likely be utilizing Canvas for you to upload particular assignments at some time in the future. At this point, do not send me anything.

Things will get better!

Best,

Mr. Mulhern

ENC1102--Romantic Poetry

Scholars: Read and annotate the following poems using the Poetry Explication Guidelines (https://scholarmulhern.blogspot.com/2018/01/enc-1102-poetry-explication-skills.html). Later in this course, you will connect ideas within these poems to the principles of Romanticism and Transcendentalism (You will learn about those ideas soon).

Use a dictionary to look up any words that you do not know. Consider uncommon definitions of words in order to help you understand the poem. The Romantics were highly metaphoric and symbolic. What connections can you make among the poems? Similarities? Differences? Consider language, style, mood, theme, etc.

ENC1102: Poetry Explication Skills

Read the poem through at least twice.
  1. Look up the definitions of any words that you don’t know. Often, poets use secondary, less well-known definitions of words. Scan all definitions to help you better understand the poem.
