ENC1101 Research Paper

“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world...would do this, it would change the earth.”
―
William Faulkner

Use your analysis essay assignment on "Still Crazy After All These Years: America's Long History of Political Delusion" as a major part of this research paper (consider it a partial first draft for this Research Paper). https://scholarmulhern.blogspot.com/2021/11/enc1101-still-crazy-after-all-these.html  You will be able to use a lot of material you wrote in that analysis essay to answer the prompt for this research paper (see below).

You should also refer to at least two other articles you read on misinformation, conspiracy theories, why people lie, and/or how misinformation can hurt a democracy. You will have to adapt the analysis essay to write the essay below. You may work with a friend or friends (up to three) with the understanding that you will all receive the same grade and you all are responsible for turning in your own printed-out copy (with your name highlighted in the heading) in order to receive a grade. If you do not turn in your own printed-out copy, you will receive a grade of zero.

As usual, you all should have electronic copies of this essay on your laptop. You must tell me ahead of time with whom you will be working. You must also tell me the name of the facilitator, who is responsible for making sure that the paper is completed on time. You may handwrite on the top of your collaborative Research Paper the name of the facilitator. I suggest you create your document through Google docs or whatever platform is easiest for you. I also suggest you exchange emails and phone numbers.

Again, please note that the Analysis Essay will have to be adapted into an argumentative-style research paper (answering the argumentative prompt below). Much of the work you did in that analysis essay can be used, but be sure you write a research essay that fluidly and coherently answers the research prompt and does not simply add a few paragraphs to the already created analysis essay.

Of course, your introductory paragraph and thesis for this Research Paper should be based on the prompt below.

The Guardian, a newspaper in the United Kingdom, writes, "We're in a post-truth world with eroding trust and accountability." Why is truth so important in daily life, both private and public, as well as in the realms of government, politics, the media, and social platforms?

Write an essay in which you hypothesize the reasons our world has become increasingly less truthful; then argue for the importance of securing truth in all aspects of our culture. In what ways can we ensure that lies or "alternative facts" do not harm our democracy? What happens when a country can no longer distinguish between fact and fiction? Be sure to cite examples from readings to support your argument. You may also want to refer to contemporary news events.

Your paper must be three pages (to the bottom), with an additional Works Cited page. Use MLA format, one-inch margins, a heading, headers, and 12-point Times Roman font. Include at least three references to research articles. Your paper must have proper internal citations, and your Works Cited page should follow the MLA style. Refer to links on my website.

You may ask, "How many quotes should the paper include?" My answer is that you should have at least one quote (no more than a sentence) from each article you used for your research. You may quote from each article more than once, but be sure the bulk of your paper consists of your own original ideas and is not filled with a bunch of long quotes. Your commentary, elaboration, and arguments are what is most important--your voice and original ideas.

Also remember that even a paraphrase from one of your articles should be cited. Citations are not just used for quoted material.

Review the "Peer Editing of Research Essay" Rubric by clicking on the "Rubrics for Writing and Reading" tab at the top of my website. However, the only rubric you need to staple to the front of your essay is the Proofreading Checklist. Include the names of all the people who worked on this paper.

Staple the Proofreading Checklist to the front of your essay.
