Essay on Native American Literature
Native American myths taught members of the different tribes lessons about life. The stories also answered questions that individuals in the tribe had about their culture and environment. “The World on the Turtle’s Back” answered questions about the origin of the world and revealed ideas about the relationship between humans and animals, as well as explained other important societal values. The trickster tale “Coyote and Buffalo” suggested some valuable advice about how to act as a member of a community and offered a reason why buffalo were no longer present in the land of the Okanogan people. The folk tale “Fox and Coyote and Whale” explored attitudes that tribe members held about love and friendship.  Native American myths can also offer modern Americans lessons about how to conduct their lives because people, even though they may be separated by time and place, often ask similar questions and share common values and attitudes about life.
