  • Read the selection carefully. Take copious notes. Look up the definitions of words that you do not know.
  • Find examples of effective rhetoric. Use the Persuasive Techniques Handout to guide you. Write the quotes down (include page numbers and sections of the page). Write 2 to 3 elaborative sentences, commenting on the effectiveness of each rhetorical device. Use SOAPS; think of the meaning of the particular words you quoted. You should have at least ten examples of quotes with elaborative sentences/commentary. Be as specific as possible in your elaboration.
  • Answer the questions at the end of the reading selection (267).
  • Use the Reflection Sheet to guide your thinking before, during, and after reading and discussion.
