Course Information


Information—Mr. Mulhern's English Courses--High School Courses, College Courses
(ENC1101 and ENC1102)
Goals:
  • To develop writing, reading, and critical thinking skills
  • To foster an appreciation of British and World Literature (English IV) and American literature (Engilsh III); nonfiction literary texts—argumentative, narrative, and analytical with a variety of subjects and perspectives (ENC 1101); short stories, essays, poetry, and drama (ENC 1102)
  • To develop skills of analysis and argumentation
  • To improve writing—grammar and mechanics
  • To help students understand the different genres of writing (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, the essay, the short story, the novel, speeches)
  • To help students understand the effects of Globalization
  • To prepare students for college and/or the world of work
  • To facilitate knowledge of current events
  • To prepare students for the SAT and the ACT

Types of Activities: Writing (several essay types), reading, and discussion; oral presentations; student-led class discussions; quizzes; tests.
Reading Materials:  The Language of Literature textbook, Collections textbook, Into Literature textbook (electronic), novel(s) and/or nonfiction texts (English IV); Patterns for College Writing (a collection of essays), Rules for Writers (ENC 1101); How to Write Anything (a collection of short stories, essays, and poems) (ENC 1102).
Materials Needed for Class:  3-ring binder, loose-leaf paper, pen, pencil, highlighter, folder, flash drive

Priorities for this Year:
  • Study for and take the SAT and the ACT.
  • Investigate post-secondary opportunities (college and careers).
  • Utilize Naviance.com and Collegeboard.org to decide on schools and to get help with planning for a career. 
  • Should apply to college, if desired (seniors).
  • Maintain an excellent GPA.
  • Work on application and scholarship essays (especially for seniors).
  • Work on completing Community Service hours.
  • Prepare a resume (juniors and seniors--use Naviance).
  • Investigate internship opportunities for the summer.
