Research Paper, Peer Editing (Generic)


Peer Editing—Research Paper (Put a checkmark at the end of each bulleted point as you review.) Staple this sheet to the front of the paper when you have completed the editing process.
  • Write "Peer Editor" and your name at the top of your classmate's paper.
  • The MLA format is correct throughout—12 point Times Roman, Arial, or New Courier font (something basic); double-spaced throughout; heading correct format; headers (name and page in right top corner) correct format, font, and size on every page; one-inch margins; no extra space between paragraphs; no extra space in heading; no extra space between heading and title or title and essay; paper has title in correct format (centered, 12-point font, capital letters when appropriate, no underline or bold or quotations).
  • First paragraph is no longer than five sentences.
  • No overly long blocks of text—Write, "need paragraphs."
  • Strong specific, focused thesis statement. Underline it.
  • Paragraphs are cohesive (seems fluid and not confusing) with excellent support, elaboration, and explanation.
  • Strong, original, opinionated voice throughout essay. No plagiarism.
  • The essay meets requirements and criteria outlined on the assignment sheet.
  • Four internal citations (can be paraphrased material); if quotes, they should be small (even words and phrases will do).
  • Write on paper which parts are most effective and why. Write on paper which parts are least effective and way.
  • Fix grammar and spelling. Rewrite sentences if needed. Suggest additional sentences, if needed.
  • Write comments on paper (like a teacher)
  • Works Cited page correct format: double-spaced, no numbers, alphabetical order, "Works Cited" centered (no quotes); the listed citations should match the briefer internal citations. If student cited a work on Works Cited page that is not within paper, write, "This citation is not included in the body of the essay."
  • Paper should be at least three pages to the bottom (for the essay itself); the fourth page should be the Works Cited page; it also needs a header on it (name and page number upper right corner, correct font).
  • Write what letter grade you think the essay deserves at the top of the paper.
